Cottage Short Breaks in Scotland
Scotland is the northernmost of the home nations of the UK. Its capital is the city of Edinburgh, and other large cities include Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee - all popular tourist destinations in themselves. These vibrant cities make Scotland a favourite for those who want a short break holiday with cultural and historical interest.
The country boasts some of the most dramatic scenery anywhere in the British Isles, and is an ideal choice for walking and fishing short breaks.
To the far north are the glens and mountain ranges of The Highlands, as well as Loch Ness, the UK’s deepest freshwater lake and allegedly the home of the fabled Loch Ness Monster!
In the south of the country you will find the more gentle rural vistas of the Southern Uplands and the valleys of the Central Lowlands; the Forth-Clyde valley being a fine example. There are lochs here also, most notably the immense and picturesque Loch Lomond. All of which makes Scotland a very desirable place for an activity filled short break with great opportunities for mountain biking, climbing, sailing and golf.
A holiday in Scotland also has the benefits of a coastline that stretches for nearly 10,000 kilometres. Situated along these shores is a mix of sandy beaches, fishing villages and estuary inlets (or firths). Famous firths include the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. Away from mainland Scotland can be found nearly 800 islands such as the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Famous Scottish landmarks include historic castles in Stirling and Edinburgh alongside more modern engineering feats of the Forth Road Bridge and the Falkirk Wheel. Scotland is also well known around the world for its fine whiskies and many distilleries are open to visitors so why not take in a ‘wee dram’ while on your cottage short break!
