Our Cottages in Dorset
The county of Dorset is situated in the south west of England. Its coastline lies on the English Channel and part of the coastline is the famous Jurassic Coast. Along its length can be found natural wonders like Durdle Door's natural arch, the limestone cove at Lulworth and the 18 mile long shingle bank of Chesil Beach. The county also has areas of heathland, hilly regions such as the Purbeck Hills and the Dorset Downs and boasts one of the largest natural harbours in the world, Poole Harbour.
The county town is Dorchester. Other towns in the county include the historic market towns of Shaftesbury, Sherborne and Blandford Forum, the popular seaside resorts of Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis as well as the large seaport of Poole. The county also has many picturesque villages which are nestled in places such as the Blackmore Vale and Frome Valley. For literary enthusiasts, the county is synonmous with Thomas Hardy and his works.
Other things to see range from the impressive hilltop remains of Corfe Castle to the stately splendour of Kingston Lacy House, the famous chalk carving of the Cerne Abbas Giant to the Iron Age hill fort of Maiden Castle, and the subtropical gardens and swannery at Abbotsbury to the Monkey World ape and monkey sanctuary. A perfect rural retreat for a cottage short break!
